Bands of colour stack like the layers of a forecast — warm sand and ochre at the foot, giving way to the impossible turquoise of northern waters between weather fronts, and above it all a sky heavy with burgundy cloud-mass pressing in from the Atlantic. It's a seascape built on horizontal tension, each stripe of land, sea and sky holding its own while the whole composition pulls together into something both elemental and surprisingly still.
The Hebrides exist in the imagination as much as on any map — remote, exposed, defined by what the ocean brings. This painting captures that quality: not a postcard view, but a felt sense of place.
The title is based on Hebrides, a coastal weather station named in the Shipping Forecast.
The Hebrides are an archipelago off the west coast off the Scottish mainland.
Split into two groups of Inner and Outer Hebrides there are more than 50 inhabited Islands in the group.
