I painted this urban landscape after a recent trip to Venice. Venice is an artist's paradise but I wanted to find a view that was quintissentially Venetian but not one of the tourist traps. I settled on this backwater which could be anywhere in Venice, but coudn't be anywhere else. I love the disappearing perspective and the run-down appearance of the canalside buildings as viewed from a bridge over the canal. A touch of modern with the speed boat adds the final contrast. Executed quickly in acrylic with a knife I was trying to capture something immediate about the Italian city.
