{"product_id":"cactus-man-after-odilon-redon","title":"Cactus Man (After Odilon Redon)","description":"This is a ceramic sculpture replicating in 3D the famous Odilon Redon image of a spiny head in a planter box. Do a search, \"Odilon Redon cactus man\", to see the original. Redon's work is unsettling and intriguing and in some ways was the forerunner to the Surrealist movement. There is always something mysterious present in his work. \r\nI relish the challenge of replicating a famous 2D depiction into three dimensions and I have previously used Francis Bacon's Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion (1944) as inspiration (now sold). \r\nThe original is quite sketchy and lacks strong detail. This is the challenge when recreating 2D into 3 - one has to interpret the minutiae while trying to keep to the spirit of the original. \r\nThis sculpture is made of a high-fire stoneware with iron oxide and a green glaze. The head has spikes as thin as is possible using this stoneware. As it is stoneware, they are stronger than they look especially with the glaze layer. The planter box has an iron oxide finish giving it a kind of tarnished terracotta effect.
